2K Games has unveiled its first-ever free-to-play live-service shooter, Project Ethos, via an announcement trailer and a community playtest that anyone can take part in.

Developed by 31st Union, 2K describes Project Ethos as a “third-person roguelike hero shooter” with a focus on randomized upgrades (called Evolutions) that allow players to tailor each hero to their specific playstyle.

“Shape your playstyle every match through Evolutions: powerful, semi-randomized, upgrades unique to each hero,” 2K shared in a press release announcing the game. “Evolve a sniper into a close-range skirmisher, or a support role into a powerful lone wolf. Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle.”

The community playtest provides access to two modes: Trials and Gauntlet. Trials–described by 2K as the game’s “signature mode”–sees squads of up to three players teaming up to take down the competition while collecting cores. Epic has revealed more details about how it intends to attract developers to its recently launched mobile store. The company plans to draw in more mobile game developers with self-publishing tools, a free games program, and reduced commission fees for studios using the Unreal Engine to develop their games.

“In the holiday season we’ll open up with our first third-party applications,” Epic Games Store general manager Steve Allison said after the Unreal Fest Seattle event (via Mobile Gamer Biz). “We probably expect somewhere between 10 and 50 of them to be ready, and the biggest thing is just going to be implementing a payment solution, so that may push some of these out into the subsequent months.”

With God of War Ragnarok’s PC release coming soon, Sports betting site B Sports Sony revealed that there is an option to reduce the frequency in which players hear puzzle hints from other characters.

According to the PlayStation Blog, the new option is in the Gameplay Settings tab. Enabling it will make it so that companions like Atreus and Mimir won’t provide puzzle hints nearly as often. For some players, the banter was quite annoying. While the game’s puzzles aren’t overly difficult to solve, some players still like to figure them out by themselves.

The game is also getting cinematic audio descriptions, which plays audio descriptions of visual events during cutscenes. This helps provide additional context alongside the spoken dialogue in order to create a more detailed experience for players with low vision. An electrifying zapper is good for immobilizing some enemies, but it’s useless against those with shields. A lobbed grenade is handy against those shielded enemies, but it prevents you from taking more devastating firepower with you to fight beefier foes. Void Bastards forces you to make small decisions with each stop at a not-so-abandoned vessel, which makes these encounters challenging and exciting.

Void Bastards puts you in the space shoes of numerous rehydrated “clients” aboard a stranded personnel vessel, whose AI has had no choice but to rely on its dangerous cargo to repair the ship for a final jump to its destination. You are tasked with searching any nearby ships for special items and other resources, using components you find to craft new weapons and tools that will help you both evade and combat the numerous nasty enemies protecting these rewards.
